Dulaan is the Mongolian word for warm. This project seeks to inspire the generous spirit of the knitting community to help meet the needs of Mongolia’s impoverished people. Mongolia’s winter is extreme. It rarely gets above freezing temperatures on winter days, and can often plunge to -40°F at night. The capital city, Ulaanbaatar, is the coldest capital in the world.Warm, well-made clothing can allow a child to go to school or an adult to go to work; restore a sense of dignity; and, in some cases, literally save a life. This project was started in 2005 at the height of FIRE’s aid distribution project. The low overhead and great feelings these beautiful hand-made items bring to everyone who makes them, distributes them, and ultimately receives them has encouraged us to keep this project in motion despite FIRE’s shift in programming focus.
While we are still accepting the hand made items, we are no longer able to ship them to Mongolia. Because we have a permanent office in Mongolia you can mail your boxes to Mongolia directly. From our Mongolian office, we will gladly distribute them to the most needy of people.

Participation in The Dulaan Project is simple:
- Please use any yarn and color you like. There is a need for hats, mittens, socks, scarves, sweaters, blankets and more, including fleece blankets that require no knitting or sewing. Sizes are needed for all ages from babies to adults. We encourage knitters and non-knitters alike to participate.
- When packing your items, write your name and address, as well as the number of items you are sending, on a piece of paper. Inventory forms can be downloaded at the link below, for your convenience. Put the paper or inventory form into an envelope and tape the envelope securely to the outside of the box.
- Send your items to either the Arizona or Mongolia address.
- The Inventory Form also serves as a tax-deductible receipt and are available at the link below. Please copy the Inventory Form for your tax records.
