Viral Hepatitis Research Project
In cooperation with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Mongolian Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Mongolian Ministry of Health, FIRE has initiated an effort to study the prevalence of blood borne viruses among 1,000 urban, suburban, and rural health care workers in Mongolia. NIH has scientifically studied the samples. FIRE has also conducted a risk factor questionaire with all participants. The test results from NIH and the questionaire responses will be analyzed to provide a greater understanding of the source of hepatitis in the health care environment.
This study will provide Mongolian authorities with a highly specific resource from which to form health policy and develop strategies for increasing awareness, prevention, detection, and treatment among health care workers. This study has gained the professional expertise and support of leading hepatitis researchers from within NIH, such as Dr. Harvey Alter, who co-discovered the hepatitis B vaccine and led the research team that identified hepatitis C.
Currently, FIRE has finished the collection of samples and NIH has finished all of the testing. FIRE is process of correlating the data and writing the final report.
